8 Cool Places to Eat in Sydney

Australia may not have a well-defined national cuisine. But that doesn’t mean you should overlook the food here!

Sydney is a major world-city. It attracts chefs from all over the globe. Here you will find an assortment of restaurants serving international cuisine.

Plus, you will enjoy some delicious and Insta-worthy treats, too.

During my recent trip to Australia, I conducted some serious research on Sydney’s food scene. AKA I ate as much as I could during my 4 days in the city.

Black Star Pastry

Strawberry-Watermelon Cake is the dessert you didn’t know you needed.

Ok, if you are on Instagram, you might already know that you needed to try this treat.

In 2008, the owner of Black Star Pastry created this cake for a friend’s wedding. A few years later, it became a viral sensation. Foodies still line up outside the bakery’s four locations ready to try this cake.

But, this cake is more than just an opportunity for a colorful Instagram post. Just read this description from their menu: “two layers of almond dacquoise (like a meringue), rose-scented cream, watermelon, strawberries and garnished with pistachios and dried rose petals.” YUM!

The Strawberry-Watermelon Cake is light, airy, and not too sweet. I’ve never had a cake with a layer watermelon, but it worked really well! But, if that doesn’t sound like your thing, Black Star also serves a variety of other pastries and coffee.

Bourke Street Bakery

Bourke Street Bakery opened in 2004 and has been a Sydney-staple ever since. They are opening a NYC location later this year and I can’t wait to check it out!

This bakery is known for serving hand-made pastries and delicious coffee. The cafes are welcoming and relaxed. The staff were incredibly friendly when I visited and made me feel at home.

Bourke Street Bakery is known for their tarts, but their croissants and muffins are also tasty. Oh, and don’t forget to order a Flat White!

Harry’s Cafe de Wheels

For over 70 years, this small food cart has been serving some of the best pies in Sydney.

Harry’s signature is the Tiger Pie-a beef pie topped with mashed potatoes, gravy, and mushy peas. Maybe it doesn’t look (or sound) incredibly appetizing, but I promise this pie is dang good.

This is the perfect place for a late-night meal or a quick lunch. Plus, they have a location in the Sydney neighborhood of Woolloomooloo which is almost as much fun to visit as it is to say. (Ok, it’s a little more fun to say. But here you will find a shipyard area known as Finger Wharf filled with trendy restaurants and bars that are worth checking out).

Speedo’s Cafe

When you are in Bondi Beach, don’t miss the chance to visit Speedo’s Cafe. Here you can enjoy a healthy brekkie + beachfront views + get some colorful content for your Insta feed. What more do you need?

Speedo’s offers a menu filled with fresh smoothie bowls, eggs, toast and coffee. I spent a leisurely morning here pretty much feeling like I was in paradise. If you can, grab a seat outside or by the window for the best views.

The Squire’s Landing

If you want a good drink with an even better view, check out The Squire’s Landing.

Situated on Sydney Harbor, you can soak in views of the Opera House and Bridge while enjoying a craft beer or cider. There is a large outdoor patio where you can spend some time enjoying the views and sunshine.

Just a head’s up, this location is right next to the cruise ship dock. I planned to grab a drink a The Squire’s Landing on my first day in Sydney. Unfortunately, a cruise ship was docked in the Harbor, completely blocking the view of the Opera House. Luckily it was gone later in my trip, so I came back and had a perfect view.

Ramen Zundo

I quickly learned that Sydney and Melbourne are both filled with malls. But not the typical mall you might be thinking of. These shopping districts are filled with trendy restaurants, green space for relaxing, and (often) open ceilings.

In Sydney’s CBD I wandered into the World Square Shopping Centre and found Ramen Zundo. This place has a cute outdoor patio decorated with string lights. Here I tried dipping noodles for the first time and quickly wondered why I’d never eaten these before!

Ramen Zundo is delicious and affordable. If you are looking for a moderately priced and cute place to eat, be sure to stop by. There are over 40 eateries in the shopping center, so even if you don’t feel like ramen you are bound to find something you like!

The Observer Hotel

The Observer Hotel is a trendy pub in The Rocks. A bar originally opened in this spot in 1848. Today this is the perfect spot to grab a drink or meal while exploring this historic district.

I stopped by during lunch and was pleasantly surprised to find out about their lunch special. Monday-Friday from 11am-4pm you can order fish and chips for $10. They also serve plenty of local beers, ciders, and specialty cocktails.

Gelato Messina

Hands down this was the best frozen dessert I tried in Australia.

Gelato Messina opened in Sydney in 2002 and now also has a few locations in Melbourne. Each flavor is unique and made with the highest-quality ingredients. You can try flavors like Apple Pie, Hokey Pokey (honey gelato with chocolate-covered honeycomb) and Milk Chocolate with Chocolate Peanut Fudge (my favorite!).

You can order a scoop, milkshake, or splurge on a gelato cake.
